In the spirit of Small Business Saturday, each Saturday this month, we’ll be spotlighting a local small business that embodies the values we share as an electric cooperative, particularly the principle of “Concern for Community.” This week we’re highlighting a true culinary gem nestled in our community: Black Forest Bistro. For over 12 years, Chef Deanna Johnson, owner of Black Forest Bistro, has been a dedicated member of Mountain View Electric Association (MVEA), and her story exemplifies the spirit of resilience, dedication, and community focus.
Chef Deanna’s journey to opening the Black Forest Bistro was influenced by her family’s experience in the restaurant industry. Her culinary upbringing led her to launch her own business in Colorado’s Black Forest. Originally inspired by her successful food truck, the Black Forest Chew-Chew, she recognized a need for a unique, sit-down dining experience within the community. Thus, Black Forest Bistro was born, opening its doors nearly five years ago.
Today, Black Forest Bistro is known for its “casual fine dining” atmosphere—a space where gourmet dishes meet a welcoming, family-friendly setting. Deanna’s creative, ever-changing weekly menu is crafted from ingredients she hand-selects, ensuring only the freshest and most sustainable items are served. Her commitment to excellence shines through in every detail, from the handmade dishes to the unique tableside experience of pasta served from a 60 pound wheel of parmesan.
What truly makes Black Forest Bistro stand out, however, is Deanna’s “of the community, for the community” approach. Not only does she live and work locally, but she also partners with nearby ranchers and growers, contributing to a vibrant local economy. Her vision is about more than food—it’s about building connections, giving back, and creating memorable experiences for each guest. “These aren’t customers; they’re guests,” she explains. The restaurant's staff shares this mindset, and many team members have been with Deanna since the start, adding to the family-like environment she’s created and fostered.
Deanna emphasizes how essential stable, reliable electricity from MVEA has been to Black Forest Bistro's success. Operating in a rugged setting with unpredictable weather, Deanna depends on MVEA to power her business smoothly through all conditions. “We need stability, and Mountain View Electric has delivered that for our home and business,” she shares. Deanna also notes that MVEA’s affordable rates compared to other electric providers she has had in the past are appreciated in today’s challenging economy, helping her manage costs while maintaining the high standards her guests expect.
Deanna’s accomplishments haven’t gone unnoticed. In 2024 alone, Black Forest Bistro received 12 awards across categories like Best Chef, Best Service, and Best Craft Cocktails. For Deanna, these accolades are humbling. “I burst into tears when I found out,” she recalls, feeling honored by the recognition her team has earned.
